Festival of the Arts: Beyond the Culinary
There’s finally more than the culinary arts featured at Epcot and it’s the best time of the year. Festival of the Arts is here for its second year and I couldn’t be happier. While Epcot is well known for its festivals and its food booths, this new festival brings more culture to Epcot and its patrons.
The biggest highlight of Festival of the Arts is the access that it gives to the artists. The ability to purchase a piece of art and then have the artist sign it and/or personalize it is something that few people will get to experience in their lifetime.
Another great part of this festival is the other art forms that are brought to the stage. Right by the Fountain of Nations, a stage has been set up to feature acrobats and gymnasts for a series called Art Defying Gravity. Also featured on this stage is Visual Art in Performance where an artists brings Disney characters to life right before guests’ eyes. The musical arts are also featured here where marching bands and jazz ensembles from Central Florida’s finest schools show off their talent. And of course, the living statues show off their performance talent around the fountain.
Speaking of performance art, the Disney on Broadway Concert Series is beyond amazing. Featuring 3 pairs of Broadway performers from one of Disney’s Broadway plays singing songs from 4 select plays, including Tarzan, Newsies, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Aida, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. If you've never seen a Broadway performance, this series is a can't miss- and if you’ve seen any Broadway performance, you must see these performers again!
Finally, it’s the little touches all over the park that make this festival more than most. There’s art photo ops where you can pose in one of many famous paintings, including The Scream and Birth of Venus. Guests can also go on an Art Walk through each country and find displays to create rubbings in their passports of a significant artistic feature relevant to each country. Throughout World Showcase, guests can find chalk artists and create art by painting a mural or creating a T-shirt. The Odyssey also featured seminars and an exhibit on attraction posters. For the kids, the Kidcot Fun Stops and Figment’s Brush with the Masters scavenger hunt.
I’m so happy that the Festival of the Arts has returned again this year. If you haven’t had the chance to visit last year, make sure you get there this year. And if you can’t make it this year, you should absolutely plan to visit next year.
