The Road To Infinity War Part 1: Iron Man (2008)
The start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, begins here! Over the course of the next few months, once a week I’m going to briefly touch on the various films in the Marvel line up in preparation for Avengers: Infinity War. These won’t be reviews, but just some musings and anecdotes to get us excited for what has been leading to this “endgame” for the first generation of Marvel films.
As a long time comic reader, I was very familiar with the character of Iron Man. One of my favorite story lines, the Armor Wars, is still in my top 10 of all time. When I became aware that a big screen adaptation of Iron Man was coming, I naturally became excited to see what would be in store.
The first movie gave us Tony Stark played to perfection by Robert Downey Jr. As far as origin stories go, I’ve always felt that the first Iron Man did a great job establishing his. The villain here, Obadiah Stane (aka Iron Monger) I feel was a great villain personally, even if the final battle left a bit to be desired.
Great moments to be found here are plenty. Stark building his first suit and subsequent escape. The full reveal of the red and gold MK III, Iron Man taking on the warlord faction, the first appearance of S.H.I.E.L.D.
One of the things that Iron Man has firmly going for it is that it establishes the idea of a cinematic universe for its roster of characters. We didn’t know then what it would lead to, but the appearance of Nick Fury did promise that The Avengers were going to be a big part of it.
HOW IT CONNECTS TO AVENGERS INFINITY WAR: Beside the aforementioned reveal of a potential Avengers team, it doesn’t directly. Interestingly enough though, Thanos himself first appears in the comics in Iron Man #55 (1973).
Currently Iron Man is available on Blu Ray, DVD, and Digital.
